The Durango Area
The city of Durango, Colorado was organized in 1880 as a railroad depot site of the Denver and Rio Grande railroad company. The city is named after the Mexico state by Governor Alexander C. Hunt who became impressed with the Mexico state of Durango after a scouting visit.
Today, the area is served by U.S. Highways 160 and 550. A 25-mile stretch of U.S Highway 550, between Silverton and Ouray, is nicknamed the Million Dollar Highway due to the breathtaking sights and thrills one can encounter along the way. While coasting along the winding mountain road, which crosses three different mountain passes, you can expect to be thrilled by hairpin curves, and captivated by the enchanting sights of a road originally built for stagecoaches and horses.
A roadtrip along the Million Dollar Highway could include a stop in Silverton for a gold mine tour; a visit to the ghost town of Animas Forks; a healing bath at ancient hot springs, an exploration of the San Juan National Forest; a peaceful retreat at Molas Lake; a thrilling experience through the Red Mountain Pass; a peak at the abandoned Idarado Mine; admire the sights of the Uncompahgre Gorge; a swim in the Ouray public pool, filled with hot spring water; and marvel at the stunning views of the Box Canyon waterfall.
